Every area in the Pole Star APIs has a zone type and a sub-type. Filtering by type gives you a whole regulatory or operational class; filtering by sub-type narrows to a specific kind of area. Coverage is global, and each zone carries polygon data defining its exact extent.Ports are zones. There is no separate port taxonomy, so the same types and sub-types describe both, and zone and port questions are answered by the same combined endpoint.
Set by agreement between maritime employers and the International Transport Workers' Federation, establishing conditions for seafarers in high-risk areas.
Sub-type
Description
HRA (High Risk Area)
Significant piracy or armed conflict risk. Enhanced security measures, and often hazard pay
ERZ (Extended Risk Zone)
Surrounds an HRA. Additional precautions warranted, less stringent than the HRA itself
WOA (Warlike Operations Area)
Active armed conflict. The highest level of hazard pay and special contractual terms
Pass the zone type to capture a whole class, and add the sub-type to narrow within it. If your goal is a specific sub-type or set of sub-types, you can filter on sub-type alone.
Type and sub-type combine with AND
Using both filters together requires a zone to satisfy both, so an invalid pairing returns nothing instead of falling back to the broader type. Check the combination exists before assuming the result is real.
